Medical Company Puts Body Fat to the Test
January 23, 2002 -- Indianapolis, IN-- Public Safety
Medical Services is a unique, multi-disciplinary privately-owned organization
serving public safety departments who seek health, fitness, and medical
evaluation services. The facility is the most experienced medical, fitness
and psychological services provider to public safety agencies in the State
of Indiana. The ultimate goal of Public Safety Medical Services is to
improve the quality of life of all uniformed personnel.
Public Safety Medical Services offers a wide spectrum
of packages and services to its clientele ranging from complete physical
examinations, nutrition analysis and recommendations, fitness and health
assessments (including BOD POD body composition testing), exercise prescriptions
as well as health and wellness educational seminars.
Darrell Mendenhall, Manager of Fitness and Health Promotion
at Public Safety Medical Services notes, "On average, our team conducts
about 1,400 body composition tests per year. In the past, we have used
skinfold calipers and bioelectrical impedance for our body composition
tests. Both are reasonably accurate in most cases. However, as we needed
a precise standard for our body composition tests, the BOD POD made the
most sense. Its margin of error is the lowest available and the technology
behind it is leading edge."
Mendenhall continues, "Due to 'intertester error',
skinfold calipers (even in experienced hands) are not entirely accurate
or reproducible. In addition, calipers tend to underestimate the body
fat of obese individual while overestimating the body fat of lean individuals.
Lastly, on some obese clients, it's near impossible to get a good pinch.
As far as bioelectrical impedance, the hydration variable can be a factor
in varied results."
Though Public Safety Medical Services does not set departmental
policy on health and fitness standards, its testing services do identify
individuals who need to increase their health and fitness levels. The
facility helps those to get on course through an exercise prescription
catered to their particular fitness goals.
